Cathie I. Hoover

Queen of Rickrack

My name is Cathie Hoover. For almost 25 years, I've been quilting and designing wearable art for myself, my family, and for others. I love the sharing my quilting skills with novice and experienced quilters all over the world, and I enjoy traveling to any location to do so.

Over the years, I've just about done it all in the world of fabric, quilting, and wearable art. My specialties include all types of machine appliqué, decorative machine embellishment, wearable art design, and a wide range of piecing and quilt construction techniques. My credentials include a Home Economics degree and textile skills honed over 44 years of sewing. Whatever your skill level, one of my goals is to help you realize your potential as a fabric artist.

“Tips for Designing the Perfect Quilt”

Quilting has long been recognized as an American art form. I am an artist using fabric to design works of art. For the last 17 years, quilting has been my passion. I love the process of choosing a pattern and the fabric. I found out early on that I enjoy finding easy ways to design and make quilts. I started teaching quilting 11 years ago and enjoy inspiring new artists. From attending Empty Spools Seminars for several years, I have been privileged to have studied under Ann Fahl, Caryl Bryer Fallert, Carol Taylor, Nancy Elliot McDonald, Jean Wells, Freddy Moran, and Gwen Marston. By taking classes, you take ideas that work for you to form your own works of art. Two years ago, I discovered a technique of putting your quilt on point without cutting any side setting triangles. In collaboration with my current publisher, there are now 16 patterns available using this new technique. Known as the Straight To The Point ™ Series, the patterns have been featured by publisher Quiltwoman.com, and Make-It-Easy at the past Houston International Quilt Shows, Portland Quilt Market, and Pacific International Quilt Shows in Santa Clara, California. I also have five in publication with traditional layouts. This past year, I have been honored to have been asked by three magazines to design patterns for future issues. For Quilter's World, one pattern will be featured in the Spring 2009 issue and another new pattern will appear in a later edition. Both Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting and American Quilter will be publishing different new patterns designed exclusively for them in upcoming issues later in 2009! Be sure and watch for them!

Brenda Henning

“How did I Get Here?”

Hi. My name is Brenda and I quilt. I've been known to sneak fabric into my purse in case I need a fix while away from home. I take a calculator to bed with me to compute quilt yardage and block piecing in the middle of the night. I disguise fabric purchases in the checkbook register, titling the check as a grocery purchase. I even lift my favorite sewing machine into airline overhead storage bins rather than leave her home alone. I live in Alaska. Our winters are 6 months long, who really wants to go outside and get cold anyway? I am a quilter... and I am addicted! My husband considered an intervention to discuss my problem... But soon realized that if a group of my friends were to meet together, we would just QUILT!!

Janet Fogg

Mostly self taught, Janet has been sewing since childhood when after losing her mother she claimed the family sewing machine as her own. "It became a tool for survival, both practically and emotionally." Janet knew at a young age that she wanted to be an artist and pursued a graphic design degree and a career in art direction.

What she didn't know was that someday she would sew her art. "After leaving my design career to be a stay at home mom, I began to patch my two creative worlds together. All it took was one quilt and I was hooked." Many of the idea generation and design skills she practiced as an art director have surfaced in her approach to quilt making including visualization and brainstorming. "The idea or the beginning is the most important part of the work."

Susan P. Mark

Since taking my first quilting class over 20 years ago, quilting has been a very important part of my life.

My studies have included intensive design courses in England and Canada, as well as quilting techniques, history, fibre and dyeing workshops.

My pattern business partner, Daphne Greig, and I have formed Patchworks Studio, a quilt pattern company that has received generous support around the world.

I have co-authored "Quilted Havens" with Daphne Greig, published in 2000 by the American Quilter's Society and "Fat Quarter Frenzy" in early 2005.
